Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont Says Bangkok Now Safe

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday expressed confidence over safety in Bangkok without martial law. Lifting of martial law in 41 provinces, including Bangkok, went into effect on Friday.

"Bangkok is now safe. There's nothing to worry about," Gen Surayud said.

Most of the troops were to be withdrawn from Bangkok, though some would remain in areas where police experienced a manpower shortage.

However, if there was an unexpected event, the government could immediately enforce the Executive Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations, which would empower the officers in their missions of security and investigation.

Despite the lifting of martial law, which limits political activities, Gen Surayud said the government could control the political situation in the aftermath of the New Year bombings over the next one or two months.
