Karen Ruammit Village is home to many Thailand elephants. The Karen hill tribe operates an elephant camp where you can pay less than $10 for a long elephant ride around the village and river area. Karen Ruammit Village is situated on the Mae Kok River in the Mae Yao sub-district of Chiang Rai.

Karen Ruammit Village is an elephant camp maintained by the Karen Hill Tribe. Other hill tribes such as the Hmong, Akha, Lahu, Lisu and Tai Lue also live in and around this village. Karen Ruammit Village is a very popular Chiang Rai, Thailand tourist attraction for elephant riding. Karen Ruammit Village elephant riding camp is about 19 kilometers from the center of Chiang Rai. You can get there either by car or by long-tail boat which drops you off right at the elephant camp.

In the picture above, my tour guide Addy and I get started on our elephant ride. The elephant riding times are negotiable, but 30 minutes to 1 hour or more is required if you wish to travel around the whole village. On our day trip to visit Karen Ruammit Village we just wanted a short 15 minute elephant ride in and around the river. We spent more time taking photos of the elephants and feeding them bananas and fresh sugar cane instead. Snacks for the elephants are available for purchase at the camp.

After we finished feed the elephants bananas and sugar cane, we were ready to take an elephant for a ride. In the picture above Addy and I are riding an Asian Thai elephant in the Mae Kok river. The elephants enjoy the water and will splash around if you ask them to splash. Asian elephant tours are also available for trekking and safari trips into the Thai jungle or hill tribe areas.
